Classification of Hiking Trails

In general there are the five classifications used to rate a hiking trail, whereas depending on who you talk to or what guide or reference you use there can be a different opinion as to what the class or rating actually represents. When you are reading a route description or trip report, keep in mind that there may not be general agreement on ratings. Always have a plan B if the trail you pick becomes too difficult. Better to be safe than sorry.

Here are the general classifications:

Class 1

· Hiking on trail

· Walking along a clear, well established trail (sidewalk)

Class 2

ATACTV - Creating Distanse Between You and Your Attacker

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Written by TOM CLARKE

Palm Strike within Arms Reach? Not in Today’s world.

In the past many have taught to “Palm Strike” to create distance if attacked.  As with everything, we must evolve while also enhancing our training and tactics.  Firearms are projectile weapons; your chance of survival is greater when you “create a distance” between you and the attacker.  Do not reach out offering your limb, which can and will be used as a control point.

Using a Palm Strike may create distance between you and the threat or it may also increase your liability!  Reaching out to push, palm strike or touch an attacker (offering a limb or control point) is very risky. A  attacker is simply going to grab your limb (or clothing) and use it as a control point to bring you even closer.  They will now be able to pull you into their position of choice or even take you as a hostage.

We do not encourage palm striking or offering a limb.  Rather, “Shield” the attempt initiated by the attacker and rapidly deploy your weapon if justified.  No, not every attacker may have grappling, Brazilian Jujitsu, Muay Thai or basic high school wrestling, but what if they only have had basic (5-10 mins.) instruction on how to use a limb or clothing as a control point against you? Regardless if you are an every day civilian or elite military operative, just take a few minuets to think about what type of skills you may be confronted with.  NEVER underestimate the skills of the threat, a confrontation or the enemy.

Remember, if they can touch you then they can take you down or even worse.  So why reach out to touch them?  Evolve your training and tactics with the current times.  Criminals are educated more than ever and are continuously advancing their corrupt skills.  They do not use your grandfather’s techniques, nor should you.

FOUR UNIVERSAL FIREARMS SAFETY RULES. ( You should LIVE & BREATH these rules)

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

FOUR UNIVERSAL FIREARMS SAFETY RULES.  ( You should LIVE & BREATH these rules)

Rule # 1

Assume all firearms are loaded. No exceptions. Always assume that any and all firearms are loaded at all times. Perform a chamber check and a magazine check each and every time you pick up a weapon. When a weapon is handed to you or you hand off a weapon, perform a chamber check to assure the weapon is not loaded.

Rule # 2

Never let the muzzle of a firearm point at anything you are not willing to kill, damage, hurt or buy. This includes everything that you can think of: a person(s), yours or others feet, hands, a dog, cat, TV, car, couch, chair, or simply a spot on the wall.

Rule # 3

Keep your finger off the trigger (and off the trigger guard) until you have made the command decision to fire. This should be rule number one. Find and locate a reference point on the weapon and know it. This should be a location outside the trigger guard, not the magazine release, but simply a spot that your finger is on prior to trigger placement. Negligent discharges only happen when the trigger is pressed. A firearm is a mechanical device that requires a physical action to “fire”. You cannot tell it to fire. The trigger must be pressed. So keep the finger out of the trigger guard until you have made the decision. That is why there is a trigger guard in order to guard the trigger.

Rule # 4

Be sure of your target and what is behind it. You must be aware of the berm, barrier or back stop. Never shoot without assuring that the round you fire down range can be stopped by an intended body or a cover that is sufficient to the ballistic caliber and cartridge you are shooting. Know what is behind your target at all times. Equally important, you must guarantee your hits. If you miss the target you have missed your guarantee that the bullet will be stopped. Do not shoot at sounds or a target that you cannot positively identify. Know what is in line with the target and what is behind it (bullets are designed to go through things). Be aware of your surroundings at all times including range, desert, urban, interior and all environments which you may be confined to.

WARNING - CAUTION: Never depend on the mechanical device to confirm that the weapon is unloaded or cleared out.  The only method of confirming that the weapon is “safe” is to have the bolt open, chamber empty, safety on, and no magazine in the weapon, with the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

Pistol Failure to Eject or Extract Malfunction Clearance

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Tom Clarke writes of Handgun Clearance procedures for “FAILURE TO EXTRACT/EJECT”. This Step by Step procedure is something you should know how to do to keep your firearm running.  Check it out!

Description: Failure to Eject or Extract

Most often a Failure to Extract is referred to as a “stovepipe” that identifies what it looks like but not the cause of the malfunction.  We do not get into the controversy of it should be called this or that; all we care is that you understand what caused it and how to clear it. Below it is clearly broken down in a simple version. Remember, KEEP IT SIMPLE and BASIC, the basics are what work.  MORE HERE
