Watch “Gunny” Take Charge in Our New TV Ad!

Too many Americans have, for one reason or another, have chosen to sit on the sidelines by not registering to vote. Unfortunately, this includes too many American gun owners. It’s part of my job to do something about that.

That’s why the NRA Freedom Action Foundation is wasting no time this year to launch our massive “Trigger the Vote” voter registration drive. Protecting our freedoms requires an informed electorate that’s motivated to go to the polls. We know that when gun owners vote, freedom wins!

But in virtually every state, you have to be registered before you can vote. That’s why the NRA Freedom Action Foundation sponsors the important “Trigger the Vote” voter registration campaign, featuring film legend Chuck Norris as our Honorary Chairman.

This year, Chuck is getting an assist from another action hero - R. Lee “Gunny” Ermey, retired Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant, and member of the NRA Board of Directors. We are proud that Gunny volunteered his time to film a new voter registration PSA, and we wanted to give NRA Members the first look. Here’s what Gunny had to say about the ad:

“Listen up and hear me well! This is a critical time for our nation, and too many people are sitting back to let others do the hard work. So it’s time for all of us to put some gas in it and persuade all eligible gun owners to register. That’s why I volunteered my time to film the ad shown here. Now it’s your turn and I want to see results! Start now by sending this message to everyone you know who supports the Second Amendment. I expect 110% right now from everyone who values our freedoms! NO EXCUSES. And remember — pain is just weakness leaving the body!”

- R. Lee “Gunny” Ermey, NRA Board of Directors

Sounds like he’s serious! Watch the ad here and send it to your friends, family, and fellow gun owners.

Sincerely,

Chris W. Cox

On Sheep, Wolves, and Sheepdogs - Dave Grossman

Friday, February 10th, 2012

Thanks to Dave Grossman and his well written article.  In these rough times, people must realize the “wolf” is not far away and they may be confronted at any time.  I chose to be a “SHEEPDOG”!!!!  Read on . . .

By LTC (RET) Dave Grossman, author of “On Killing.”

Honor never grows old, and honor rejoices the heart of age. It does so because honor is, finally, about defending those noble and worthy things that deserve defending, even if it comes at a high cost. In our time, that may mean social disapproval, public scorn, hardship, persecution, or as always, even death itself. The question remains: What is worth defending? What is worth dying for? What is worth living for? - William J. Bennett - in a lecture to the United States Naval Academy November 24, 1997

One Vietnam veteran, an old retired colonel, once said this to me:

“Most of the people in our society are sheep. They are kind, gentle, productive creatures who can only hurt one another by accident.” This is true. Remember, the murder rate is six per 100,000 per year, and the aggravated assault rate is four per 1,000 per year. What this means is that the vast majority of Americans are not inclined to hurt one another. Some estimates say that two million Americans are victims of violent crimes every year, a tragic, staggering number, perhaps an all-time record rate of violent crime. But there are almost 300 million Americans, which means that the odds of being a victim of violent crime is considerably less than one in a hundred on any given year. Furthermore, since many violent crimes are committed by repeat offenders, the actual number of violent citizens is considerably less than two million.

Thus there is a paradox, and we must grasp both ends of the situation: We may well be in the most violent times in history, but violence is still remarkably rare. This is because most citizens are kind, decent people who are not capable of hurting each other, except by accident or under extreme provocation. They are sheep.

I mean nothing negative by calling them sheep. To me it is like the pretty, blue robin’s egg. Inside it is soft and gooey but someday it will grow into something wonderful. But the egg cannot survive without its hard blue shell. Police officers, soldiers, and other warriors are like that shell, and someday the civilization they protect will grow into something wonderful.? For now, though, they need warriors to protect them from the predators.

“Then there are the wolves,” the old war veteran said, “and the wolves feed on the sheep without mercy.” Do you believe there are wolves out there who will feed on the flock without mercy? You better believe it. There are evil men in this world and they are capable of evil deeds. The moment you forget that or pretend it is not so, you become a sheep. There is no safety in denial.

“Then there are sheepdogs,” he went on, “and I’m a sheepdog. I live to protect the flock and confront the wolf.”

If you have no capacity for violence then you are a healthy productive citizen, a sheep. If you have a capacity for violence and no empathy for your fellow citizens, then you have defined an aggressive sociopath, a wolf. But what if you have a capacity for violence, and a deep love for your fellow citizens? What do you have then? A sheepdog, a warrior, someone who is walking the hero’s path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed

Let me expand on this old soldier’s excellent model of the sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs. We know that the sheep live in denial, that is what makes them sheep. They do not want to believe that there is evil in the world. They can accept the fact that fires can happen, which is why they want fire extinguishers, fire sprinklers, fire alarms and fire exits throughout their kids’ schools.

But many of them are outraged at the idea of putting an armed police officer in their kid’s school. Our children are thousands of times more likely to be killed or seriously injured by school violence than fire, but the sheep’s only response to the possibility of violence is denial. The idea of someone coming to kill or harm their child is just too hard, and so they chose the path of denial.

The sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, can not and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheep dog who intentionally harms the lowliest little lamb will be punished and removed. The world cannot work any other way, at least not in a representative democracy or a republic such as ours.

Still, the sheepdog disturbs the sheep. He is a constant reminder that there are wolves in the land. They would prefer that he didn’t tell them where to go, or give them traffic tickets, or stand at the ready in our airports in camouflage fatigues holding an M-16. The sheep would much rather have the sheepdog cash in his fangs, spray paint himself white, and go, “Baa.”

Until the wolf shows up. Then the entire flock tries desperately to hide behind one lonely sheepdog.

The students, the victims, at Columbine High School were big, tough high school students, and under ordinary circumstances they would not have had the time of day for a police officer. They were not bad kids; they just had nothing to say to a cop. When the school was under attack, however, and SWAT teams were clearing the rooms and hallways, the officers had to physically peel those clinging, sobbing kids off of them. This is how the little lambs feel about their sheepdog when the wolf is at the door.

Look at what happened after September 11, 2001 when the wolf pounded hard on the door. Remember how America, more than ever before, felt differently about their law enforcement officers and military personnel? Remember how many times you heard the word hero?

Understand that there is nothing morally superior about being a sheepdog; it is just what you choose to be. Also understand that a sheepdog is a funny critter: He is always sniffing around out on the perimeter, checking the breeze, barking at things that go bump in the night, and yearning for a righteous battle. That is, the young sheepdogs yearn for a righteous battle. The old sheepdogs are a little older and wiser, but they move to the sound of the guns when needed right along with the young ones.

Here is how the sheep and the sheepdog think differently. The sheep pretend the wolf will never come, but the sheepdog lives for that day. After the attacks on September 11, 2001, most of the sheep, that is, most citizens in America said, “Thank God I wasn’t on one of those planes.” The sheepdogs, the warriors, said, “Dear God, I wish I could have been on one of those planes. Maybe I could have made a difference.” When you are truly transformed into a warrior and have truly invested yourself into warriorhood, you want to be there. You want to be able to make a difference.

There is nothing morally superior about the sheepdog, the warrior, but he does have one real advantage. Only one. And that is that he is able to survive and thrive in an environment that destroys 98 percent of the population. There was research conducted a few years ago with individuals convicted of violent crimes. These cons were in prison for serious, predatory crimes of violence: assaults, murders and killing law enforcement officers. The vast majority said that they specifically targeted victims by body language: slumped walk, passive behavior and lack of awareness. They chose their victims like big cats do in Africa, when they select one out of the herd that is least able to protect itself.

Some people may be destined to be sheep and others might be genetically primed to be wolves or sheepdogs. But I believe that most people can choose which one they want to be, and I’m proud to say that more and more Americans are choosing to become sheepdogs.

Seven months after the attack on September 11, 2001, Todd Beamer was honored in his hometown of Cranbury, New Jersey. Todd, as you recall, was the man on Flight 93 over Pennsylvania who called on his cell phone to alert an operator from United Airlines about the hijacking. When he learned of the other three passenger planes that had been used as weapons, Todd dropped his phone and uttered the words, “Let’s roll,” which authorities believe was a signal to the other passengers to confront the terrorist hijackers. In one hour, a transformation occurred among the passengers - athletes, business people and parents. — from sheep to sheepdogs and together they fought the wolves, ultimately saving an unknown number of lives on the ground.

There is no safety for honest men except by believing all possible evil of evil men. - Edmund Burke

Here is the point I like to emphasize, especially to the thousands of police officers and soldiers I speak to each year. In nature the sheep, real sheep, are born as sheep. Sheepdogs are born that way, and so are wolves. They didn’t have a choice. But you are not a critter. As a human being, you can be whatever you want to be. It is a conscious, moral decision.

If you want to be a sheep, then you can be a sheep and that is okay, but you must understand the price you pay. When the wolf comes, you and your loved ones are going to die if there is not a sheepdog there to protect you. If you want to be a wolf, you can be one, but the sheepdogs are going to hunt you down and you will never have rest, safety, trust or love. But if you want to be a sheepdog and walk the warrior’s path, then you must make a conscious and moral decision every day to dedicate, equip and prepare yourself to thrive in that toxic, corrosive moment when the wolf comes knocking at the door.

For example, many officers carry their weapons in church.? They are well concealed in ankle holsters, shoulder holsters or inside-the-belt holsters tucked into the small of their backs.? Anytime you go to some form of religious service, there is a very good chance that a police officer in your congregation is carrying. You will never know if there is such an individual in your place of worship, until the wolf appears to massacre you and your loved ones.

I was training a group of police officers in Texas, and during the break, one officer asked his friend if he carried his weapon in church. The other cop replied, “I will never be caught without my gun in church.” I asked why he felt so strongly about this, and he told me about a cop he knew who was at a church massacre in Ft. Worth, Texas in 1999. In that incident, a mentally deranged individual came into the church and opened fire, gunning down fourteen people. He said that officer believed he could have saved every life that day if he had been carrying his gun. His own son was shot, and all he could do was throw himself on the boy’s body and wait to die. That cop looked me in the eye and said, “Do you have any idea how hard it would be to live with yourself after that?”

Some individuals would be horrified if they knew this police officer was carrying a weapon in church. They might call him paranoid and would probably scorn him. Yet these same individuals would be enraged and would call for “heads to roll” if they found out that the airbags in their cars were defective, or that the fire extinguisher and fire sprinklers in their kids’ school did not work. They can accept the fact that fires and traffic accidents can happen and that there must be safeguards against them.

Their only response to the wolf, though, is denial, and all too often their response to the sheepdog is scorn and disdain. But the sheepdog quietly asks himself, “Do you have and idea how hard it would be to live with yourself if your loved ones attacked and killed, and you had to stand there helplessly because you were unprepared for that day?”

It is denial that turns people into sheep. Sheep are psychologically destroyed by combat because their only defense is denial, which is counterproductive and destructive, resulting in fear, helplessness and horror when the wolf shows up.

Denial kills you twice. It kills you once, at your moment of truth when you are not physically prepared: you didn’t bring your gun, you didn’t train. Your only defense was wishful thinking. Hope is not a strategy. Denial kills you a second time because even if you do physically survive, you are psychologically shattered by your fear helplessness and horror at your moment of truth.

Gavin de Becker puts it like this in Fear Less, his superb post-9/11 book, which should be required reading for anyone trying to come to terms with our current world situation: “…denial can be seductive, but it has an insidious side effect. For all the peace of mind deniers think they get by saying it isn’t so, the fall they take when faced with new violence is all the more unsettling.”

Denial is a save-now-pay-later scheme, a contract written entirely in small print, for in the long run, the denying person knows the truth on some level.

And so the warrior must strive to confront denial in all aspects of his life, and prepare himself for the day when evil comes. If you are warrior who is legally authorized to carry a weapon and you step outside without that weapon, then you become a sheep, pretending that the bad man will not come today. No one can be “on” 24/7, for a lifetime. Everyone needs down time. But if you are authorized to carry a weapon, and you walk outside without it, just take a deep breath, and say this to yourself…

“Baa.”

This business of being a sheep or a sheep dog is not a yes-no dichotomy. It is not an all-or-nothing, either-or choice. It is a matter of degrees, a continuum. On one end is an abject, head-in-the-sand-sheep and on the other end is the ultimate warrior. Few people exist completely on one end or the other. Most of us live somewhere in between. Since 9-11 almost everyone in America took a step up that continuum, away from denial. The sheep took a few steps toward accepting and appreciating their warriors, and the warriors started taking their job more seriously. The degree to which you move up that continuum, away from sheephood and denial, is the degree to which you and your loved ones will survive, physically and psychologically at your moment of truth.

Tom Clarke & Mark Flinn, H&K USC Ready Position Presenting to your Target

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Tom Clarke and Mark Flinn teaching how to present your H&K USC rifle from the ready position.  Tom also goes into detail on what degree of angle you should be at and all the steps that are involved as your bring the rifle up to point in at your target.  A presentation should be smooth, directly to the target, bring the rifle into your line of sight.

In the ready position you already have three of the four points of contact. Once your cheek weld is on the comb if the rifle stock your four points of contact are completed.

1. Firing hand

2. Support hand

3. Stock / Shoulder weld

4. Cheek weld

Permitting the shooter manage the recoil with a solid, stable foundation.  n.

Remember, as the rifle comes up, the safety comes off and your sequence of shooting begins. This is a fast presentation, but must be practiced to get the proper mechanics and sequence habitual.

NRA Will Appeal Texas Concealed Handgun Case

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Click here to vote in this week’s poll.

NRA will appeal yesterday’s decision by a federal court in Texas, which held that the Second Amendment doesn’t protect any right to keep or bear arms outside the home.

The decision, handed down by U.S. District Judge Sam Cummings of the Northern District of Texas, came in the case of Jennings v. McCraw, in which a group of law-abiding 18- to 20-year old adults challenged the state law prohibiting issuance of concealed handgun licenses to persons under 21, who are treated as adults for virtually every other purpose under the law. (NRA is also a party on behalf of its members in this age group.) Judge Cummings ruled that it was unnecessary to address the state’s discrimination against young adults because “the right to carry a handgun outside of the home … seems to be beyond the scope of the core Second Amendment concern articulated in Heller [v. District of Columbia].”

Chicago: Challenge to Ban on Guns Outside the Home Goes Forward: On January 19, a federal judge in Chicago allowed NRA-supported plaintiffs to move ahead with a challenge to that city’s laws that ban anyone from possessing or carrying a handgun except in his or her home, and that ban possession or carriage of a long gun anywhere outside his or her home or place of business.

Congressional Action Needed to Stop Obama/Holder Gun Registration Scheme: Last week, a federal district court in Washington, D.C. issued a ruling upholding an Obama administration policy that requires federally licensed firearms retailers in states bordering Mexico to report multiple sales of semi-automatic rifles. The case was brought by two NRA-backed firearms retailers and by the National Shooting Sports Foundation acting on behalf of its affected members. Plaintiffs have already filed an appeal—but while we await the outcome, your help is urgently needed in seeking congressional action to end this illegal policy.

Rumor Alert: The Vehicle Gun Theft “Epidemic”: Long before Al Gore “created” the Internet, gun owners were busy perfecting grassroots networking. Today, gun owners have an almost unlimited number of ways to spread information crucial to our community. And, while the Internet is certainly an indispensible tool for protecting our rights, an unfortunate side effect has been the fast and easy spread of rumors.

Second Amendment Weekend at Cabela’s in Dundee, MI: Join NRA-ILA Headquarters staff February 10-11th, 2012, for a weekend of important grassroots education for gun owners. 2012 is undoubtedly the most critical election year ever for our Second Amendment rights and we must redouble our efforts to guarantee victory on Election Day.  Please make plans to attend NRA-ILA’s FREE Grassroots Workshop and NRA University to learn what you can do to become a better activist in the fight to protect and promote the Second Amendment!

GEORGIA: Bill Introduced to Further Regulate Georgia Right-to-Carry
On January 13, state Representative Roger Bruce (D-64) introduced legislation that would undermine Georgia’s Right-to-Carry law. House Bill 735 would amend the current concealed carry law by mandating a firearms safety training course within one year of application for Georgia Firearm Permit. HB 735 has been referred to the state House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee for further consideration.

HAWAII: 2012 Hawaii Legislative Session Convenes
The Hawaii Legislature convened on Wednesday, January 18.  There are several bills that have been carried over from the 2011 legislative session, as well as some newly introduced gun-related measures. We will be updating you on the status of these bills as it changes and providing you with information needed to take action as the session progresses.

ILLINOIS: Oak Park Considering More Firearm Regulations
The Village of Oak Park is holding a community forum on Tuesday, January 24, to hear public comments relating to the imposition of additional local restrictions on the sale and possession of firearms. This forum will be hosted by the Board of Health, and the views expressed will be communicated to the Village Board as it considers enacting restrictions on where, how and to whom firearms are sold, and how they are stored.

IOWA: Resolutions Protecting Traditional Ammunition to be Heard in State Senate and House Committees
On January 19, the state Senate Natural Resources and Environment Subcommittee passed Senate Joint Resolution 2001 by a 2 to 1 vote and it will now go before the full committee.  This resolution would remove the Iowa Natural Resources Commission’s unnecessary regulation banning the use of traditional ammunition for dove hunting.  Also on January 19, the state House Natural Resources Subcommittee passed the House companion resolution to SJR 2001 by a 3 to 2 vote.

NORTH CAROLINA: Forsyth County Board to Vote on Local Park Carry Restrictions
The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners is considering an ordinance to address the local park carry provisions of House Bill 650, as previously reported
here.  You may recall that, HB 650 removes the absolute authority of local governments when it comes to deciding if Right-to-Carry (RTC) permit holders may lawfully carry their firearms into parks under the control of these local governments. This new law, which went into effect on December 1, 2011, allows localities to impose some restrictions on carrying in certain parks by permittees.  However, the new law does not in any way mandate adoption of these permissible restrictions.

PENNSYLVANIA: Penn Township to Consider Discharge Ordinance
Recently, the Penn Township Board of Supervisors announced its interest in forming a citizen subcommittee to explore the enactment of a firearm discharge ordinance in the community.  For more information on this important firearm issue, please read the Lancaster Online article, Penn explores firearms law, by Beth Anne Heesen.

TEXAS: Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission to Consider Rule Change to Allow Hunting with Suppressors
At its next meeting on Wednesday, January 25, the Regulations Committee of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission will present proposed amendments to the 2012-2013 Statewide Hunting Proclamation. It will seek permission for them to be published in the Texas Register for public comment. These amendments include a regulatory change that would expand the use of lawfully-possessed suppressors on firearms while hunting non-nuisance species. This common sense reform will help prevent hearing loss and mitigate noise complaints against sportsmen in the Lone Star State.

VIRGINIA: Sunday Hunting Legislation Passes Senate Committee!
Yesterday, the Senate Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources Committee considered four similar Sunday hunting bills. The committee rolled these four bills into Senate Bill 464 and then passed it by an 11 to 4 vote. This legislation will now be sent to the full state Senate for its consideration.

Hearing on Castle Doctrine Self-Defense Bills Postponed!
Although scheduled for January 18, the Criminal Law Subcommittee of the House Courts of Justice Committee postponed its hearing for four “Castle Doctrine” bills. At this time these bills are expected to be considered next week. “Castle Doctrine” establishes the presumption that an individual who forcibly enters one’s home, business or occupied motor vehicle is there to cause death or great bodily harm, and allows force, including deadly force, against that person.

WASHINGTON: Washington Shooting Range Protection Bill Needs Your Help!
On January 12, House Bill 1508, a vital shooting range protection bill was heard in the House Judiciary Committee. Due to the short legislative session, this bill needs to be voted on soon if it is going to pass this year. Please contact your state Representative today and respectfully urge him or her to support House Bill 1508.

10 Tips to Help Prevent a Potential Home Invasion - ATAC TV

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

For many Americans, home invasions are what happen to “other” people. Most people do not plan for this as they do not believe they will ever be the victim of this type of crime, or any type of crime for that matter. Initially the best defense is awareness. Being alert can save your life and that of your family. As in any emergency situation, Do Not rely on the police or other people to come to your rescue in your time of need.

You will need to rely upon yourself and/ or your family members as law enforcement can only respond to what crimes they are aware of. If by chance they are made aware of a crime in progress, there is still the issue of how much time will pass before they actually arrive on scene. At that point we must also consider this home invasion could turn into a hostage situation. If that happens then your chances of escape as well as your choices shrink considerably.

1. NEVER open the door for a simple knock or for anyone selling or asking questions unless you know them. If you open it, you have just allowed the criminals entry to your home and have jeopardized the safety of your entire family.

2. Develop a crisis/emergency plan with your family. Rehearse it so that everyone is sure of his or her roles. Try to work in as many variables as you can think of. When unsure of how to go about developing such a plan, do not hesitate to contact a professional for help.

3. Keep a cellular phone accessible inside your home. Make sure it is always charged and in good working order. Your cell phone is no good if it is off; leave it on through the night.

4. While in your home, keep all the doors locked. Do not leave your garage door open at any time, unless you are doing something directly in front of it. If you are outside mowing the lawn, keep the garage door closed and locked.

5. Vary the routes you travel daily to work and/or recreational activities.  These criminals can also monitor a traditional or regular pattern of your schedule in order to follow you directly back to your home.

6. Know your neighborhood. Be familiar with the people, their vehicles and their typical daily routines. Be alert if anything is out of sorts. Unfamiliar people or vehicles.

7. When approaching your home after being out, scan the area for anything out of place or unusual prior to entering your property.

8. Always maintain proper lighting to the approach of your residence. Be alert if one or more lights

are not working.

9. Set up key words with your family members so that you can all communicate an emergency covertly, in the event you or a family member is in trouble. An example of this is as follows; you are out shopping, your youngest daughter who is 17 years old is home but an intruder is with her. You call her from your cellular phone on the way back from your work or outing and she answers by hitting the key pad three times then saying to you “I am sorry you must have the wrong number” and presses the key pad as many times as possibly before she hangs up. This is your signal that she is in grave danger and you immediately call the police.

10. When possible, designate or construct one room or place in your home to be the “safe room”. This room must maintain a very solid door (fire proof when possible), heavily constructed walls and ceiling. Always keep a form of communication, preferably a cellular phone in that space that is active and fully charged. Just to mention a few other items that are important to maintain inside that room, potable drinking water, non-perishable food items, weapons and a separate electrical supply (when feasible).

Security & Safety Tips For Shopping - ATAC TV SURVIVAL

Thursday, October 27th, 2011
  • Always park your vehicle as close to the entrance as possible
  • Park your vehicle under or close to well lighted areas
  • Put all items of value in the car out of site such as, car stereo’s, cellular phones and   radar detectors
  • Close all windows completely and lock all doors after exiting the vehicle
  • Activate your vehicle’s alarm system as soon as you exit the vehicle (if there is one)
  • Walk to the closest entrance and enter immediately
  • Whenever possible, try to use the “buddy system” when going shopping
  • Whenever entering or exiting from the shopping center, walk with others
  • Always observe and scan the area from your immediate surroundings out, be aware of all movement, noises and people, as well as those people or things that are out of place.  If your instincts tell you there is danger, get out of there quickly and go directly to security or the police.
  • Never wear “flashy” jewelry to go shopping. Tuck all gold chains and necklaces under your shirt or blouse, and if possible pull down your sleeves over any bracelets. If you must wear rings, turn the ring so that any stones are facing into the palm of your hand.
  • If you are carrying a wallet, put it in your front pocket, or in the Inside pocket of a jacket. If you are carrying a pocketbook or purse, keep it close to your body and maintain one hand on it at all times.
  • If you are carrying cash, do not take it out in public view. If you have to take cash to go shopping, separate the money into smaller packets while at home, then while shopping use these individual packets for your purchases to avoid exposure of large cash sums.
  • Try to avoid carrying large numbers of bundles or packages, in other words keep your arms and hands as free as possible. Always use shopping carts where available, and whenever feasible ask the store for assistance to your vehicle.
  • Whenever storing bundles or packages in your vehicle make sure they are well hidden inside the vehicle or placed in the trunk.
  • Remember when exiting the center and approaching your vehicle to have your keys wrapped tightly in your hand. Maintain alertness of the surroundings, people and vehicles in close proximity including your own. Move swiftly and cautiously to your vehicle while continuously scanning the area. Enter your vehicle and quickly lock the doors. Do not hesitate in your final exit out of the parking area.

Security Guidelines and Tips To Teach Children - ATAC TV SURVIVAL

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Below are some simple tips and a starting point to educate your children:

  • Never talk to strangers
  • Never accept anything from strangers
  • Never open the door for anyone, under any circumstances if they are alone in the house.
  • Instruct them how to answer the telephone without giving out any personal information or divulging any information that would put them or your family in potential danger.
  • Teach them a simple word or phrase that can be used in the event someone other then you must pick them up. Explain to them that this word is a secret between you and them and they should never tell it to anybody. Then inform their teacher of this special word or phrase so they can use it for identification purposes when this other individual comes to pick them up. It is also a good idea for the teacher or authority in charge to have a full description of the individual who will pick up your child.
  • If approached by a stranger, whether on foot or in a vehicle instruct them to run as fast as they can to the nearest safe place, then define “safe place” to them.
  • Explain the “buddy” system to them and when to use it.
  • As a parent, it is your responsibility to keep track of your kids, whether playing in or outside of your home. Make sure the children understand the importance of keeping you informed of their whereabouts with definitive time frames.
  • Give them landmark boundaries within your neighborhood or property in which they must stay.
  • Teach your children what to do in case of a fire.
  • Teach your children how to dial “911” in case of an emergency.
  • Explain to your children that they should not wander away from you when out shopping together, and if they should happen to get separated, go to the security guard, policeman or other authority.
  • Teach your children what to do in case they are chased or attacked by an unfriendly dog. Be sure you know effective procedures for handling dog attacks. If you do not, be sure to learn them as your child’s or even your own life may depend on it.
  • Teach them safety rules when riding a bicycle, and make sure they know they must wear a helmet at all times.
  • Instruct your children how to cross a street, when walking or with their bicycles.
  • Teach them the significance of traffic signs and lights.
  • Be sure they understand they are not allowed to play in the streets. Teach them why they are not permitted to play in the streets.
  • Write an emergency plan that details what they should do in different types of situations. Gather the family together every so often and rehearse these situations with the kids. Clearly make them aware of the importance of these “games”, while interjecting some family fun at the same time.
